Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker (10/05/1997)

Months after Steve Austin bled like a government mule in his match with Bret Hart … Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker met in the first ever Hell in a Cell match. The event is notable for announcing the death of Brian Pillman (who was scheduled to face Dude Love that night), the last PPV Vince McMahon would work as lead commentator, and of course, the debut of Kane.

Shawn Michaels was European Champion then, and D-Generation X was in its infancy. Rick Rude can be seen accompanying D-X, the manager often forgotten. The winner would face Bret Hart for the WWF Championship at Survivor Series. It’s sad that the match itself is often forgotten in favour of the “moment” between The Undertaker and his brother Kane. You can relive this match and judge whether it deserves recognition as one of WWE’s greatest.

Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon (03/20/1994)

The World Wrestling Federation never produced a 5-star contest until they debuted the Ladder match at Wrestlemania X. It was for the Undisputed Intercontinental Championship, as Shawn Michaels disputed Razor Ramon’s title. Jack Tunney had created a new belt, due to Shawn refusing to defend his title .. so when Razor became champion, Shawn took exception to that and claimed he was the one true champion.

Many fans say it became the template for future ladder matches (and inspiration for TLC) in WWE, and probably the greatest ladder match in company history. You can be the judge … is it the greatest ladder match ever?

CM Punk vs John Cena (07/17/2011)

It’s been almost four years since WWE produced a 5-star match. CM Punk faced John Cena for the WWE Championship at Money In the Bank 2011. CM Punk was red hot after delivering the famous “shoot” promo which broke the fourth wall on occasion. CM Punk claimed his contract was going to end at midnight on the same night (which it was, for real, however he was persuaded to sign a new contract one hour before the PPV started) as the PPV, so he was going to win the championship and leave with the belt.

Vince McMahon stacked the deck against Punk by making the stipulation .. “if John Cena loses, he will be fired”, therefore putting extra pressure on Cena to deliver and retain the championship.

And that’s all I have to say. I hope you enjoy this “mini-PPV” as much as I have. I would appreciate a comment telling everyone which match you thought was the best, and why. In the words of the legend known as Mick Foley. – “Have A Nice Day!”
