WWE’s annual Money in the Bank pay-per-view is taking place this Sunday, with a tremendous match card. This is WWE’s 11th year in a row that they are hosting the show with the Money in the Bank match being the highlight of the pay-per-view.
The inaugural Money in the Bank match took place at WrestleMania 21 in what turned out to be a classic.
In 2010, WWE decided it would hold the pay-per-view as a spectacle, allowing the match to get the full spotlight.
The first few years of the show saw two different Money in the Bank matches. One would represent SmackDown while the other would represent Raw.
Once that ended, they would have just one traditional match every year. That was until 2017 when WWE decided to have both a Men’s and a Women’s Money in the Bank match.
This Sunday’s event will be the first pay-per-view event with a full capacity of fans in over a year and a half. WWE has already promised a few surprises for the show but the glory is going to go to the winners of the Money in the Bank match.
The men’s match currently features eight superstars; Big E, Ricochet, John Morrison, Riddle, Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens, and Shinsuke Nakamura.
The women’s Money in the Bank Match also features eight superstars as Tamina Snuka was just announced as the final competitor. Liv Morgan, Asuka, Naomi, Alexa Bliss, Nikki A.S.H., Zelena Vega, and Natalya are the other competitors.
In the past, this match has been career-changing for many stars. This year has the potential to be just that for some of these stars. Here is a list of the top 3 men and top 3 women whose careers would benefit from winning the Money in the Bank contract this Sunday.
Ricochet
Ricochet is one of the most exciting superstars to watch that is currently signed with WWE. His high-flying abilities and fast-paced athleticism make him a fan favorite. Though he has been with the company for a few years now, he has yet to reach his full potential.
An achievement like winning the Money in the Bank match would quickly turn things around for him.
If he were to win, it would be a change of pace for the championship picture because larger men have held both championships all year. Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley are two of the largest stars on the roster, and a feud with Ricochet would make for a good David vs Goliath story.
If he were to win and cash it in, then it would make sense for him to use it on Bobby Lashley as the two do have a history with one another. Either way, Ricochet has won championships all over the world. It could be time for him to win the big one in WWE, and the first step would be the Money in the Bank contract.
Zelina Vega
Zelena Vega recently made her return to WWE after she was released from her contract due to issues related to her business ventures outside the company. Her husband Tommy End/Malakai Black (FKA as Aleister Black) was also released recently so it came as a shock to many fans to see her returning to the company.
Her first WWE run saw her as more of a manager to Andrade and less of an in-ring competitor. With that being said, she was not able to show how talented she is in the ring on a regular basis.
Winning the Money in the Bank contract would instantly put her in the main event picture of WWE. Her character is devious and would prove to be an ultimate opportunist when cashing it in.
She might be the perfect heel in this role, and it would show that WWE is putting a lot of faith in her. No matter if, she wins or losses, WWE must have big plans for her given her return.
Again, this opportunity would change the whole trajectory of her WWE career so far, if she has something to prove, winning this match would be the way to do it.
John Morrison
Speaking of wrestlers who have returned to WWE but haven’t made much of an impact since their return, John Morrison is another person that would largely benefit from winning this match.
People remember Morrison as a tag team competitor but often forget that he had a decently successful career as a mid-card star during his first WWE run. He is a very exciting high-flyer and a veteran in the ring but is tied down by The Miz.
Miz won last year’s Money in the Bank contract from Otis and cashed it in against former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre.
If Morrison were to win the Money in the Bank contract, it could drive a wedge between him and The Miz and he will finally be able to shine as a singles star again.
If there was ever a way to put the championship on Morrison before his career is over, this would be the time to do it.
He has won championships in many other companies, which proves he has what it takes to carry a show. Either way, Morrison’s character would need to break from The Miz if he wanted to move forward in the company. The benefit of him winning the Money in the Bank contract is that it puts him in the WWE title picture alone. Therefore, setting him up for better things even if he were to have a failed attempt at cashing it in.
Alexa Bliss
Alexa Bliss has hit a standstill in WWE. She is so powerful that it is hard to believe there is anything she can’t do. If she were to win the Money in the Bank contract, it would provide for another update in her character, opening her up to do more.
Right now, many fans assume that once The Fiend Bray Wyatt returns, then her storyline will change drastically but until then she needs something else to add to the mystery of her character.
Imagine the fear she could put in the Women’s Champions if she could just appear at any time and take their championship. It would be like a horror movie character stalking their next kill. Given she has a supernatural strength behind her, it would be hard for anyone to take the championship from her. This would give her the ability to have a decent run as champion and show how strong of a competitor this version of Bliss is.
If she does not win this match and loses it clean, then it will only hurt her character. If she is some superhuman being, then she should be able to wipe the floor with the competition.
Unless something crazy happens with Bray Wyatt causing her to lose. That would be the only way a loss would benefit her.
Given that it is the first major pay-per-view with fans in attendance in quite some time, it would freshen things up if Wyatt were to interrupt this match. Either way, Bliss is a former champion but winning the Money in the Bank contract under this version of her would be beneficial to the character.
Big E
Is there a bigger fan favorite for the men’s match than Big E? Fans have been calling for a Big E championship run before he was separated from Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods. He was the WWE Intercontinental Champion for a few months but the Money in the Bank match is a shot at something bigger.
He has proved that he has what it takes as a singles competitor in WWE. Winning this match would help bring either the WWE Championship or Universal Championship to The New Day and set up bigger feuds for them as a whole.
Now, even though they are on separate brands this is a sure-fire way to put them back together. Especially, since WWE Champion Bobby Lashley is defending his championship against Kofi Kingston this Sunday.
Imagine if Kingston loses and Big E can come in and defend his honor. If Kingston wins, then Big E could cash it in on the Universal Champion and The New Day could hold both major WWE Championships.
What if Kingston wins and Big E cashes in on his New Day brother? Finally adapting to that heel turn that many expected a few years back.
Big E winning the Money in the Bank contract is the doorway to the next step in his WWE career. He is the fan-favorite, and the perfect face character for the role.
Liv Morgan
Now, let’s talk about a superstar that has been begging for an opportunity on-screen and off-screen. Liv Morgan is the last remaining member of The Riott Squad in WWE, which has left her in a bit of a limbo as a competitor in the women’s division.
She challenged the authority figures on SmackDown and made the demand to be put into this match showing she wants to be considered a serious threat.
She stepped into Carmella’s spot in the match and now is her time to show that she is the toughest woman on the roster. As a side character for a large amount of time, this would be the perfect way to improve her character.
If she doesn’t win, then there is no other way she can move forward. This is do or die for her character, which is why she would benefit the most. Morgan would make for a dangerous champion and winning this match could even put her up there with Becky Lynch as the top woman in the company.
She will be the fan-favorite on Sunday, and the crowd will make that known. If she wins this match, she would not only benefit as a competitor but she would be a top face in WWE’s women’s division.
