WrestleMania weekend is upon us! Now…what the hell are we going to get this year? Two days, no fans, a different feeling really wrapped us up this year. How many WrestleMania matches made the Top 5?

Before we get to this week’s Top 5 Matches; we need to address the fact that a very weird March has concluded. Last week, FINALLY, the AEW fans responded stronger than the puro fans; and Omega vs Guevara for the Mega Championship, fills out the bracket!

March MoTY Pool:
  • DDT Judgement: Ko-D Openweight Title: Masato Tanaka (c) vs Konosuke Takeshita
  • Zero1 19th Anniversary: Dangan Yankies (Masato Tanaka & Takashi Sugiura) vs Strong BJ (Yuji Okabayashi & Daisuke Sekimoto)
  • ROH TV: The Briscoes vs Bandido & Flamita
  • AEW Dynamite: AAA Mega Championship: Kenny Omega (c) vs Sammy Guevara

Out of this very interesting pool, my vote would go, DDT: Ko-D Openweight Title: Masato Tanaka vs Konosuke Takeshita; but honestly, it’s all pretty close.

Before we get into the Top 5 this week, just let me say I did enjoy both The Boneyard Match and Firefly Funhouse match. However, those were more like Lucha Underground produced mini movies and not really a match. Though I really enjoyed both; neither qualified for the list since I don’t really consider them “matches”, in the dictionary sense.

5. Dragon Gate The Gate of Passion: GHC Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: Naomichi Marufuji & Masaaki Mochizuki (c) vs Diamante & Takashi Yoshida

Matches

MochiMaru’s first official defense thanks to all of the corona rescheduling. Marufuji has been enjoying branching out to different promotions the last year or so; and he found an old friend and great partner to validate some cross promotion fun. Yoshida and Diamante are essentially the only real Heavyweight heel tag team that Dragon Gate had to offer since they focus more Junior/Lucha style.

Part of the story in this match was the meeting of both worlds. The match was held under NOAH rules, with a NOAH referee; so the usual free flowing Lucha influence that the heels are used to, was scrutinized much harder. This resulted in good and bad for the champions.

The bad being when the heel faction came out to support the tag team, and caused numerous distractions and normal heel things. The good, was when Yoshida hit his Cyber Bomb, but wasn’t the legal competitor; so he had to run back to the corner, tag in and try again. That was enough of a respite for Mochizuki to resist and build a comeback.

All in all, it was entertaining if not a bit haphazard. A solid defense to set a tone going into NOAH’s Global Tag League tournament.

Winner: Marufuji via Shiranui

4. WWE WrestleMania 36: SmackDown Tag Team Title Triple Threat Ladder Match: John Morrison (c) vs Jimmy Uso vs Kofi Kingston

Kofi hurries to get the ladder back up, but Jimmy is bringing another ladder in. Kofi kicks Morrison out but Jimmy pushes the ladder in! It ends up another bridge as Kofi fights with Morrison. Kofi knocks Jimmy off the apron and then climbs. Kofi jumps off the bridge but into Jimmy’s kick! Jimmy SMASHES Kofi into ladder! Jimmy talks trash but Morrison is lurking. Jimmy stands the ladder up in a corner as he climbs. He is at the very top, but Morrison gets up! Morrison pushes this ladder over and Jimmy FALLS TO THE FLOOR!!

Morrison has an opening and he tosses ladders out of the way. He heads up the rungs and grabs at the belts, but Kofi is back! Kofi climbs up as Morrison fiddles with the hook. Kofi CLUBS Morrison and then headbutts him. Morrison kicks and ROCKS Kofi, but Jimmy returns?! Jimmy has another ladder side by side with the main one. He climbs as the other two brawl. Jimmy CHOPS and headbutts! Kofi gives them back! Morrison uses both ladders for balance, and all three men are grabbing at the belts! They all unhook it, but now it’s about who keeps hold! They keep brawling, and a DOUBLE HEADBUTT sends Morrison down! BUT WITH THE BELTS!!! The belts came off the hanger, Morrison wins!!!

3. WWE WrestleMania 36: NXT Women’s Championship: Charlotte Flair vs Rhea Ripley (c)

Rhea powers Charlotte off to a cover, TWO! Charlotte has the cover, TWO! Rhea covers, TWO! Charlotte ghost pints, TWO! Rhea KICKS Charlotte right in the arm! Rhea now stalks Charlotte to a corner. Rhea kicks Charlotte and throws body shots from all sides. She digs her shoulder into Charlotte until the ref counts 3. Charlotte and Rhea trade hands but Rhea hauls Charlotte up top. Rhea swats Charlotte then climbs up to join her.

Charlotte resists as Rhea pulls, and then clubs away on Rhea’s back. Charlotte SUPER GOURD BUSTERS Rhea down! The ref reprimands them both but Charlotte adjusts. Charlotte MOONSAULTS, but into BOOTS! Rhea and Charlotte run at each other, Charlotte SPEARS Rhea down! Cover, TWO!?! Charlotte is speechless as Rhea survives! Charlotte paces before going after the leg again. 2. AEW Dynamite: Trent vs Kenny Omega

Snippet from Mitchell’s Coverage:

Trent clutches his neck but Omega isn’t done with him. Omega drags Trent up for another full nelson, but Trent elbows back. Trent has Omega on the ropes with those elbows, then he runs. Omega follows, but Trent LARIATS Omega anyway! Trent drags Omega up, Alabama lift, but Omega fights free! Omega lifts, POWERBOMB! Flip over, V-TRIGGER!! Somehow Trent is in one piece and he gets himself to the apron. Omega joins Trent out there and stalks up behind him. Trent resists the lift and holds the rope for dear life. 1. WWE WrestleMania 36: Last Man Standing: Randy Orton vs Edge

Matches

Snippet from Mitchell’s Coverage:
But Orton won’t let it end with that. Orton has a chair under Edge’s head…! He tells Edge this will be over soon, and Edge can go back to his wife daughters. Orton hobbles as he brings up the other chair. The ref says Orton doesn’t have to do this, but Orton raises the chair. Edge catches Orton in an arm-triangle!! Edge squeezes tight and Orton fades! Orton might be out as Edge rests his head on a chair. Edge has the other chair now, and he tells the ref to stop the count. The count was at 5 but Edge wants to end this his way.

Edge hesitates, though, remembering the years he and Orton were as close as brothers. Edge is almost in tears as he brings up the chair over Orton’s head! Con-CHAIR-To!!! The count begins again, and Edge is speechless as he stands over a gasping Orton. The count hits ten, Edge wins!

Winner: Edge via ConCHAIRto

Thoughts:

This was a really solid WrestleMania. It gave us some really good quality matches, entertaining cinematic interactions and was also great 3.5 hour chunks; as opposed to a work shift of mediocrity and booking questions.

So I expect WrestleMania to be received a bit better this year. Even if there were things that people didn’t like (personally I hate Braun Strowman generally, much less winning the Universal Title); it wasn’t amplified with having to sit through 7 or more hours.

All that said, my vote will go to, Last Man Standing: Randy Orton vs Edge; great story that culminated in a cathartic moment with the returning hero overcoming the abuse. Don’t forget to vote for your weekly favorite and favorite of March!
