WWE, from time to time, enjoys messing with their own fans. Whether it’s Vince trying to make someone angry, or a legitimate swerve in a storyline, WWE has pulled some memorable fast ones on the WWE Universe. Let’s take a look at the top five times WWE trolled fans.

5. Mark Henry’s “Retirement”

Future Hall Of Famer and the “World’s Strongest Man” Mark Henry was involved in one of the greatest swerve/troll moments in WWE history. On an episode of RAW in 2013, Henry made his way to the ring in a salmon colored suit, and made a heartfelt speech about his career, his love of wrestling, and his gratitude toward the fans. He then stated he was retiring which was proceeded by WWE Champion John Cena entering the ring to congratulate Henry on a stellar career. In what seemed like a bittersweet moment, Henry shocked us all by pulling John Cena into his World’s Strongest Slam finisher and laying waste to him. This earned Henry a World Title shot which he unfortunately, went on to lose.

4. Roman Reigns Enters The Rumble At #30

The 2017 Royal Rumble was an interesting show to say the least. It was shaping up to be one of the most star studded Royal Rumbles ever with Brock Lesnar, Goldberg, and The Undertaker all participating in the match. When the timer finally ticked down for #30, fans expected a surprise entrant, however, they got Roman Reigns, who had already competed that night anyway. Roman went on to eliminate The Undertaker and then beat him at Wrestlemania later that year.

3. Hornswoggle Is The Anonymous RAW GM

The anonymous RAW GM was an intriguing storyline, however, executed poorly. In my opinion, this was one of WWE’s biggest missed opportunities to bring someone great back, but instead they trolled the fans. As the WWE Universe wondered for months who the GM really was, they theorized the likes of Steve Austin and other legends. But the eventual reveal wasn’t as glorious as fans had hoped when Hornswoggle crawled out from underneath the ring to expose himself as the GM.

2. Shawn Michaels Trolls Canada

Shawn Michaels is one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time and also pulled one of the biggest trolls on the WWE Universe. Eight years Post-Screwjob, Montreal fans were still hungry for the return of their hero, Bret hart. So when WWE traveled there for an episode of RAW in 2005, HBK cut a promo only to be interrupted by Bret Hart’s music. The arena became unglued as fans believed they were witnessing the return of a lifetime, however, Shawn quickly revealed that Hart was not in the building and that he may have gotten fans’ hopes up “just a little bit”.

1. “CM Punk Is Not Here Tonight. He’s Over At The United Center Watching The Blackhawks!”

I may be a bit biased as I was in attendance on this night in Chicago, but just a few short months after CM Punk had quit the WWE, RAW took place in his hometown. I totally fell for Heyman’s troll, but in a nutshell, fans still couldn’t accept the fact that Punk had quit. (And let’s be honest, some fans still can’t) But at the beginning of the show, Punks music blared to the delight of the fans who had been chanting CM Punk for the last 30 minutes. Chicago lost its mind only to be disappointed when Paul Heyman emerged through the curtain one minute later to mock Chicago and CM Punk’s pipe bomb promo style. This was the first time that WWE had mentioned Punk on Television since his absence.
