What the Bucc? Ship Happens in WWE & More Quick Takes

Welcome back to another round of Quick Takes—a post that indulges in the topics that aren’t worth dedicating a full article to, but are still on my mind.

Each week, I try to cram in as many smaller talking points as I can via a speedier process, and I invite you to chime in with your own thoughts about these topics and anything else by keeping the discussion going in the comments below! Drop some more talking points in there for everyone to chat it up about, too!

Without further ado, let’s get into this week’s topics.

Mutiny

Jon Alba pointed out on Twitter that the section of Raymond James Stadium that houses the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ pirate ship is tarped off. This likely means WWE won’t be filming in that section, which means no spot of Kevin Owens jumping off the ship.

That’s disappointing to hear. While KO doesn’t currently have a match announced for the show, I was holding out hope that he would be booked to do some kind of jump off it and fulfill that promise from last year.

It’s not the end of the world by any means, but it’s certainly another disappointment in the ever-growing list of reasons WrestleMania isn’t feeling as big as it could feel.

Eric Bischoff for HOF 2021

It was announced that Molly Holly will be joined by Eric Bischoff as another member of the 2021 class of the WWE Hall of Fame.

This is a fantastic idea for many reasons. First, Bischoff absolutely deserves to be inducted. He was an entertaining character for both WCW and WWE as the GM of Monday Night Raw.

Second, Bischoff was instrumental in the nWo, who will also be inducted as part of the 2020 class. When that was announced, many (including myself) wondered why he wasn’t involved. Now, we don’t have to worry about that.

Third, it makes up a bit of good will for how he moved to take a job with WWE, only to be let go soon after. That had to be an arduous situation and this is a nice apology, though he deserved to go in regardless.

Put Pete Dunne in, Coach!

As you’ve heard, there was an outbreak within the NXT system recently. The even shorter Quick Take of that is “Can you stop being unsafe and acting like this pandemic still isn’t going on? If you keep being careless and taking risks, you keep getting taught lessons.” I don’t think people should be playing around when we’re this close to WrestleMania Week and WWE can’t afford to have problems change the cards.

Speaking of changing cards, though, it seems that’s going to have to happen with the NXT Tag Team Championship regardless of the pandemic. Danny Burch looked to suffer an injury this week in his match, which is rumored to be a separated shoulder.

If that’s the case, he’ll be out long enough that he and Oney Lorcan will have to vacate the titles.

Or, perhaps Pete Dunne can sub in. We saw Timothy Thatcher as Dunne’s replacement for his tag title reign with Matt Riddle. Maybe Dunne can be swapped out for Burch in the meantime. That would prevent another title from having to be vacated and perhaps, if MSK is planned to be the next champions, whoever feuds with Dunne could cost him the match and spoil things that way.

Here’s hoping Burch isn’t actually injured that badly, though, or at all. That would be the best case scenario, obviously.

NXT UK: Prelude

WrestleMania Week is absolutely packed, but NXT UK didn’t want to be left out like Main Event and 205 Live will be. As such, we’re having a bit of a miniature TakeOver, which has been dubbed “NXT UK: Prelude”.

It’s just an episode of NXT UK, from what I gather, but with more weight to it since the NXT UK Championship is on the line. Rampage Brown will face WALTER. There will also be a No. 1 contender’s match for the Heritage Cup between Noam Dar and Tyler Bate.

I like this. NXT UK is a long way off from TakeOver: Dublin, and it wouldn’t hurt to have another special episode like this to help push things along. I’m hoping we get the women’s title defended, too. This week is so packed that I’m hoping it stays to its 60 minute time frame, though, as I’m already going to be super burned out. But at least this is better than a normal episode.

I do have to say I hate the name, though. That feels like more of a lead-in for a TakeOver event (like the kickoff pre-show) than an actual event in and of itself. I think I’d have gone with something more akin to “NXT UK: Bloody Hell” because WWE just has to use that at some point.

Lights Out

Extremely quick take, and speaking of “bloody hell”, how good was that Lights Out match between Thunder Rosa and Dr. Britt Baker? I think we’re all in agreement that it was the best match so far in AEW’s women’s division. Hats off.
