NXT Season 1 Elimination #6: Justin Gabriel

The sixth individual to be eliminated from NXT was the high-flying rookie, Justin Gabriel. Gabriel was represented by WWE pro Matt Hardy. In his first match on NXT, Justin Gabriel and Matt Hardy would defeat Skip Sheffield and William Regal in tag team action. Throughout the first season, Young would amass a record of seven wins and four losses. However, this solid record would not save the South African Savant this time around.

Young was eliminated on Week 15 (Round 1) via the WWE Pro voting system. As we’ve seen before, Gabriel would debut on the WWE main roster as a member of The Nexus. In January 2011, Gabriel would refuse to take part in The New Nexus’s animalistic initiation. This would lead to the establishment of The Corre. However, this short-lived stable would not do much for Gabriel.

Throughout the next four years, Gabriel would not do much in WWE. He would compete in the Money In The Bank match, as well as various WWE Intercontinental Championship and WWE United States Championship matches. Gabriel would wrestle his final televised match against Rusev on January 14, 2015, which he would lose. On January 25, WWE had confirmed that Gabriel had quit the company – not initially released – but quit.

Following his release, Gabriel would begin competing on the independent circuit as “The Darewolf” PJ Black. He would go on to compete for Lucha Underground between 2015 and 2019. Black would even find himself with short stints in TNA and the NWA. However, his career renaissance really came from his debut in Ring of Honor in 2018 – where he still competes actively. Black recently made his return to ROH after his hiatus from the wrestling industry due to the global pandemic.
