Which WWE & Pro Wrestling Stars Are Currently Injured Or Inactive?

Hi folks! Today, I bring you an updated wrestling injury and absentee report for June 2022. Reasons for absence can include suspensions and unexplained inactivity. This covers the WWE, AEW, Impact Wrestling, and New Japan Pro Wrestling promotions. Feel free to let us know if anyone is missing.

This section covers WWE Superstars from all brands, including Raw, SmackDown, NXT, and NXT UK.

Bayley Last July, Bayley underwent surgery to fix a torn ACL. She was slated to be out for roughly 9 months. Dave Meltzer vaguely reported she would return by February, but March would be more likely. Bayley responded sarcastically: “OMG GOOD TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE ALWAYS ACCURATE.” she is saying Meltzer does not know what he’s talking about and is just making things up. There have been no recent updates on this. She has been sidelined for almost a full year.

Big E — As many will know, he suffered a serious neck injury from a belly-to-belly suplex during a match involving Ridge Holland. Despite this, he was in good spirits, and later said he wouldn’t need surgery. A former WWE doctor said there is a chance he would need to retire, given the seriousness of fracturing his C1 and C6 vertebrae. There remains a slight chance if his C1 vertebrae don’t heal properly.

There are positive signs, though, as we reported Big E has removed his neck brace. It may still be a while until we see him return to the ring, but at least he’s on the road to recovery.

Cody Rhodes — One of the most obvious injuries because of its graphic nature, is Cody’s torn pectoral. Despite the grossly discolored bruising from his right pec and up his arm, he worked the Hell in a Cell match with Seth Rollins and has since had surgery. He’s expected to be out for roughly 9 months.

Gable Steveson — He follows in the footsteps of Kurt Angle as an Olympic Gold Medalist in freestyle amateur wrestling, and Brock Lesnar as an NCAA Division champion from the University of Minnesota. WWE jumped at the chance of signing him to a contract, assigning him to the Monday Night Raw brand.

He recently won the NCAA Heavyweight Championship for a second time and then teased a WWE appearance before removing the tweet. Gable appeared on both nights of WrestleMania. On night 2, he confronted Chad Gable and gave him a suplex.

Io Shirai — The former NXT Women’s Champion hasn’t been on TV for several months, and this is because of an ankle injury. There aren’t many details about it, other than WWE hopes she will return ‘by the summer’.

Nikkita Lyons — She has taken NXT by storm in 2022, and is one of its fastest rising stars. Lyons was heavily favored to win the NXT Breakout Tournament, but she suffered a partial MCL tear and sprain. She appeared on last week’s episode, working out to aid her recovery and promised to return soon.

Odyssey Jones — In January, while filming a match with Saurav for the now-canceled 205 Live show, Odyssey suffered a ruptured patellar tendon. The match had to be stopped and didn’t make it to air. He was written off NXT TV after being attacked by Joe Gacy & Harland. Odyssey has since had surgery and is recovering. There’s still no word on when he is scheduled to return.

Randy Orton — About a year ago, Orton made comments about the bumps he’s taken over the years catching up to him. With all the times he’s landed on his back delivering the RKO, the impacts have taken a toll, and he knew that eventually, he would need to take time off. After RK-Bro lost the Raw Tag Team titles to The Usos, Orton took his time to allow his back to recover. While saddened by the news, Riddle continues to remind the WWE Universe how great his best friend is.

Rick Boogs We couldn’t miss what happened to him, as he suffered a torn quad patella at WrestleMania 38. He posted this recovery update video last month.

Queen Zelina & Carmella — An injury some fans may have missed is one currently sidelining the Queen of the Ring. In late May, we reported Zelina has suffered a knee injury that required surgery and is expected to be out for 6-8 weeks. Carmella hasn’t wrestled since WrestleMania. While she’s featured on her new TV show with husband Corey Graves, it’s not known why she isn’t wrestling at the moment.

Sasha Banks & Naomi — You’d have to be living under a rock to not know what’s going on with the former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. They are suspended for walking out on an episode of Raw because of creative differences. Sasha Banks is supposedly released, but there has yet to be any confirmation from her or the company: WWE Reportedly Released Sasha Banks “Some Weeks Ago”

Zoey Stark Back in November, the former NXT Tag Team Champion (w/ Io Shirai) was attacked backstage by Toxic Attraction. It was a quick moment, but one which wrote her off. There was no official word on what the injury was, but Stark gave us an update a few months ago. She is still recovering from a torn ACL in her knee.

Authors Note: With Roman Reigns’ part-time contract and WWE’s lack of challengers for the undisputed championship, these injuries couldn’t have been anymore poorly timed. It would have benefitted the main event scene had Randy Orton or Cody Rhodes been available. Therefore, WWE had to bring back Brock Lesnar to fill in for the short term. On the women’s side, Bayley’s return would be appreciated, and it surely can’t be that long now?

All Elite Wrestling

Anthony Bowens — Scissor me daddio! Bowens may be confined to a wheelchair with a knee injury, but he’s not letting it get him down. He’s adding much to the new alliance between The Acclaimed and The Gunn Club with his mic work.

CM Punk — One of the most heartbreaking injuries, especially for CM Punk fans, was the revelation that he had to be sidelined with a broken foot. This was noticed in his title match with Hangman Page, as he landed awkwardly attempting the Buckshot Lariat. Again, he landed awkwardly during a spot in his trios match on Dynamite with FTR.

He wasn’t made to vacate the title, but steps are being made to crown an interim AEW World Champion in his absence. When Punk returns, he will face the interim champion to unify the titles and make them undisputed.

Darius Martin — He’s majorly unlucky. After breaking into AEW with his younger brother Dante as the Top Flight tag team, he picked up an injury that sidelined him for many months. Darius returned and had some success, but picked up an arm and neck injury shortly after. Meanwhile, his brother Dante has wrestled many matches and continues being featured against some of AEW’s best. His injuries were not wrestling-related, as he was involved in a nasty car accident.

Jeff Hardy — This has to be the most frustrating entry on the list, as Jeff once again has been found driving while under the influence. It’s more of a disappointment than a surprise, and I’m sure many would agree that he should get some real help. And not as rehab, but by serious action, because slapping him on the wrist doesn’t deter him. Reby Hardy was furious about fans claiming that she & Matt are “enablers”, which I found harsh.

Jeff is a fully grown adult and is responsible for his actions. Reby already went over the top to stop The Hardys from repeating past mistakes, so it’s unfortunate that some feel the need to pass the blame on to someone who had nothing to do with the crime.

Kenny Omega  After losing the AEW World Championship to Hangman Page, Omega has been on hiatus to recover from several injuries. Not long after, he relinquished the AAA title as well. A few months ago, Don Callis returned to AEW programming with Omega’s entrance, which served as a cruel tease to his fans. Omega had knee surgery and may have had others.

He continues to serve in his EVP role by promoting partnerships with DDT and taking interviews. Jay White is making us wait to find out who will challenge him for the IWGP World Heavyweight title. His history with Omega could lead to a surprise return at AEW / NJPW’s Forbidden Door.

Kip Sabian Way back in April of last year, Miro destroyed his tag partner and wrote him off TV. Sabian needed shoulder surgery and got it the following month. There’s still no sign of him returning, but he can’t be far away. There have been reports of Sabian being seen walking around at venues, taking pictures with fans, and sitting in attendance. He has been more vocal on social media, notably showing days out with his wife Penelope Ford. Also, he commented on how much he appreciated Christian’s heel turn.

Leyla Hirsch She suffered an injury during an AEW Dark: Elevation taping on April 5th. Last month, she posted an update on Twitter: “On April 5th, during AEW Dark Elevation, I suffered an injury. After landing on my feet from a moonsault, I tore my ACL. Today I was finally able to get my surgery. Thank you to everyone for the support. I promise to come back an improved, leaner, meaner more Legit Athlete.”

Authors Note: AEW has had its world turned upside down by recent events. CM Punk would have held the title through the summer and saw off all challengers, but that had to be scrapped to crown a new champion. The Hardys would have become the tag team champions. The Young Bucks got them instead, and will probably work in their place at Forbidden Door.

Meanwhile, Kenny Omega could return at any moment. It seems logical he would against Jay White, although if that’s not the plan, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. His absence has allowed other talents to rise through the ranks. The other injuries aren’t affecting the day-to-day product in any form.

Impact & New Japan

Matt Cardona — After working all over the world and picking up titles like the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship and Impact’s Digital Media Championship, Cardona announced he would be sidelined: “My doctor said that the recovery is five months. But my goal is three. I’m still going to be making towns. I’ve contacted every promotion I had booked, and all but two are still bringing me in because they know I sell tickets. And I rescheduled with those other two. I’m not going to be stuck at home injured. I won’t be in the ring, but this isn’t a three-month vacation. I’m just as busy as I was, even with a torn bicep.”

Su Yung — It was announced several months ago that Su Yung (aka Suzie or Susan) was pregnant with her husband, Rich Swann’s baby. She was due in February, and they confirmed it during a video of Swann holding their new bundle of joy. Swann continues to wrestle on Impact, while Su is at home on maternity leave.

Kota Ibushi — According to New Japan, Ibushi suffered a right anterior dislocation of the shoulder and joint lip damage in a match with Kazuchika Okada. His estimated recovery time was listed as two months, so they expected him to return for Wrestle Kingdom 16. This didn’t happen, and New Japan was pushing him as the face of the company leading into its 50th anniversary. As a backup, Kazuchika Okada won the IWGP World title and paid respect to the former title.

It has since been revealed that Ibushi did not want to return to New Japan because he claims there have been cases of sexual harassment. He also does not get on Kikuchi, who is part of their talent relations department. The company responded by respecting his claims, while also punishing him by reducing his pay because he breached his contract. New Japan will look into his issues. There is more to come from this story, and Ibushi remains sidelined until there is a conclusion.

Sanada — During the “New Japan Cup” tour, Sanada announced he will vacate the United States Championship after suffering a fractured orbital bone in March. Sanada requested that the championship be returned to the previous holder, Hiroshi Tanahashi, with the stipulation being that he automatically gets a title shot on his return.

Will Ospreay argued that he should be the one to get the title. At Wrestling Dontaku, Ospreay defeated Tanahashi to become the new champion. There is no scheduled time for Sanada’s return.

And this concludes the injury and inactivity for WWE Superstars and professional wrestlers from AEW, Impact & New Japan Pro Wrestling. Thanks for reading!
