Since becoming the inaugural Universal Champion back in 2016, Finn Balor was never considered a “main-event” star.
Is this about to change in the short-term future, though? Per the reports, Balor is expected to receive a major push from the company, which should have happened a long time ago.
When Balor won the Universal Title in August 2016, he was forced to relinquish it a day later, due to an injury that sidelined him for almost nine months.
He returned to action in April 2017, but has never received a push from the company since then, unlike other superstars. Balor never had his rematch for the Universal Championship, given he never lost his title.
The creative team made some inconsistent booking decisions that sank him into midcard, so he was involved in meaningless matches and rivalries with other superstars, including Baron Corbin and Bobby Lashley.
Moreover, he is currently involved in a three-way feud with Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre. Although the latter was scheduled to receive a push, it seems the WWE has decided to make Balor the top star.
Given Roman Reigns’ health issues, which have sidelined him indefinitely, the company is in search for a fan favourite and babyface, who will have the support of the fans.
Even though his microphone and wrestling skills are not of the highest level, Balor has been involved in many high-quality matches, so maybe he is the perfect candidate to become one of the faces of Monday Night RAW.
At the moment, there is no sign as to how the company will push him, but the best and most obvious way would be via a Royal Rumble win. He will then go on to challenge the winner of the match between Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman.
In such a scenario, he will certainly be the underdog and will be involved in a similar feud as the one Daniel Bryan had a few years ago with Triple H, Batista and Randy Orton.
Overall, I think Finn Balor has shown he deserves to become a main-event wrestler and, if rumours are to be true, it remains to be seen what plans the WWE has to pitch him in the title picture.
