Match Predictions and Heat Index Anticipation Levels

Temperature Scale = Scorching > Hot > Lukewarm > Temperate > Chilly > Cold > Freezing

Heat Index is my assessment of how interesting the segment is, including how excited I am for the match and how intriguing the feud has been. The hotter, the better. Scorching translates to not being able to wait to see it, while Freezing means I couldn’t possibly care less and think it will be awful.

UNIVERSAL CHAMPIONSHIP EXTREME RULES MATCH:
Roman Reigns (c) vs. Finn Balor

Heat Index = Lukewarm
Prediction: Roman Reigns wins.

Thoughts: I’ve long expressed my disinterest in going gaga over the Demon King gimmick. There isn’t enough different with Balor’s performance when he has the face paint on compared to when he doesn’t. It’s about the same as someone wrestling in new ring gear. I’ve also complained a million times about how Extreme Rules is just another way to say No DQ or Street Fight or Unsanctioned and they’re all the same, so it’s nothing special. A No Holds Barred match is as generic as it can get. Therefore, even if I think this match is going to be decent, I’m not higher than Lukewarm on it. WWE’s made it abundantly clear Balor has been in the rear-view mirror even since SummerSlam as the focus is on Brock Lesnar at Crown Jewel and then Big E at Survivor Series.

SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH:
Becky Lynch (c) vs. Bianca Belair

Heat Index = Hot
Prediction: Becky Lynch wins.

Thoughts: In a way, I kind of hate going with Hot on this one because WWE gets its way. I shouldn’t be looking forward to it after the way they did things at SummerSlam and then just said “rematch, but this time, it’s the real match” as that’s not exactly fan-friendly. However, on paper, Lynch vs. Belair is a match I’ve wanted to see. Even though there’s no way Belair wins the title, I’m still excited to check out what those two can do in the ring together.

RAW WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH:
Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Alexa Bliss

Heat Index = Temperate
Prediction: Charlotte Flair wins.

Thoughts: Temperate is being a bit modest, I feel. I was tempted to go with Chilly on this. Bliss is great, but this Bray Wyatt ripoff gimmick hasn’t been doing much for me. Flair is an all time great, but she’s been stuck in this cycle of Reign of Terror Triple H mode for years that I wish she’d break out of. This was just a means to do a match for the sake of doing a match. The feud wasn’t captivating me revolving primarily around the dolls and such. Easily, the best part of this was the promo this week where they played around with some meta stuff and called out how their characters work in this universe, but that’s not enough to make me think this will be a fantastic segment. It’ll be fine, which is why it gets a middle of the road hype score.

SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH:
The Usos (c) vs. The Street Profits

Heat Index = Hot
Prediction: The Usos win.

Thoughts: Simply put, these two tag teams are great and we’ve already seen that they can work well with each other, as anyone could have imagined. Even though this is a rematch, which costs it some points, and it should have been a ladder match or something interesting like that, I’m still more than up for watching these four guys battle it out. This is likely the sleeper best match of the night.

UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP TRIPLE THREAT MATCH:
Damian Priest (c) vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Sheamus

Heat Index = Hot
Prediction: Damian Priest wins.

Thoughts: I’ve been a big fan of Priest’s work for quite some time now, I think he’s worked well against Sheamus and Jeff Hardy, and I’m down for seeing the three of them mix it up in a Triple Threat scenario with no rules hampering them. While I don’t expect this to get real hardcore with weapons and such, I do think they could play around with battling on the outside of the ring without worrying about count-outs and that that could be the key to this performance. Sign me up. This match should be a lot of fun with Priest retaining with an inevitable pinfall.

SINGLES MATCH:
Carmella vs. Liv Morgan

Heat Index = Cold
Prediction: Liv Morgan wins.

Thoughts: I’m sorry, why are we wasting time on this card with this match? Has this feud really been interesting enough to people to justify taking up space on a pay-per-view, rather than to just let it play out on television? Am I the odd one out here thinking this has very little value to it other than to give Liv Morgan fans something to gush over when she wins? This doesn’t even have a gimmick to it and there’s no way it steals the show. Pass.

OVERALL PPV:
How excited am I for the event as a whole?

Heat Index = Temperate

Thoughts: Some of these matches should be good, but it’s too glaringly problematic to have an Extreme Rules pay-per-view with TWO gimmicks, where both those gimmicks are “generic No DQ match” and you don’t even have a full card after SmackDown.

What do you think is going to happen at WWE Extreme Rules? Which matches are you most excited to see? Keep the discussion going in the comments below!
