Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
As reported yesterday, ECW legend Sabu unfortunately passed away at age 60. As always, EWN sends out condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Terrance Brunk. And as fans, it’s on us to keep their memories alive.
My question for you today is “What are your favorite memories, matches, or moments from Sabu’s career?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
As far as my answer…
I wasn’t the biggest ECW fan when it was around. WWF always was the #1, WCW was #2, and ECW was a distant third, as there were only a few people I was actually interested in watching. Out of all the edginess, I was mostly only hooked by The Dudley Boyz, Rob Van Dam, and Sabu, as the latter instantly looked visually different and was doing different moves than the rest. While someone like Sandman was kind of fun to watch, he just punched, kicked, and hit people with stuff. Your average guy wasn’t going to do an impressive maneuver, as you’d have to watch someone like Shawn Michaels or Rey Mysterio to see that.
But Sabu was always good for a table spot or something out of the blue. Each one of his matches were worth watching for a “holy shit” moment. And that pretty much carrier throughout his career from my viewpoint as a fan. I’m not going to lie and say I ever was such a big fan that I was hoping he’d win the world title or anything, but even in WWECW, I wasn’t about to stop what I was doing to pay attention to Snitsky or Balls Mahoney, but I would keep my eyes peeled during a Sabu match.
If you asked me to think of a specific moment, my brain goes to his 2007 Royal Rumble elimination. Completely unnecessary and just for the fans to pop, the rules are ignored, Sabu comes out and sets up a table for absolutely no reason, and a few entrants later, Kane eliminates him by chokeslamming him through that same table. It’s ridiculous, but fantastic. He got in, did his thing, and got out. Hilarious.
He’s definitely a wrestler that a whole generation grew up watching and took inspiration from.
