Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
Last night on NXT, Myles Borne scored a massive and shocking victory when he won the 25-man battle royal to earn a shot at the NXT Championship at WWE Battleground against Oba Femi.
This came essentially out of nowhere, as No Quarter Catch Crew has been a Charlie Dempsey focused group, with Borne tag teaming alongside Tavion Heights. Out of some bigger names like Ethan Page, Shawn Spears, and Je’Von Evans (among others), it was Borne who is now the next in line.
People gush over how he looks like Randy Orton, but that doesn’t mean he’s his clone. With what he is actually bringing to the table, does he have what it takes?
My question for you today is “Why do you think WWE is pushing Myles Borne at this particular moment?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
As far as my answer…
I’m pretty baffled by this, but I also think it’s really cool. WWE doesn’t frequently push someone out of the blue in this fashion. Usually, there’s a slow build up the ladder, or at least a few steps where someone follows a steadier progression. That, or they come in just straight at the top, of course.
But in Borne’s case, nothing at all made him stand out as a singles competitor even in the midcard potential scene. I wouldn’t have pegged him to challenge for the North American Championship, let alone win it or challenge for the even more important title against the absolute beast that is Oba Femi. Even if he and Tavion Heights had won the tag titles, I would have thought that was a bit of a stretch.
However, that’s not me saying that he’s bad. He just flat out isn’t being positioned remotely close to this level at the moment, so it’s as if he suddenly skipped 3 or 4 promotions. It took me by surprise, but it can be a great thing if they want to legitimize him. If done well, he can jump over some boring hurdles.
On the more pessimistic side of things, I do have to say that I don’t think WWE gave him this opportunity because they want to give him the belt. Rather, I think they know they’ve already got two stronger main events in Stephanie Vaquer vs. Jordynne Grace and Trick Williams vs. Joe Hendry, so they figured they didn’t have to do one of the more important Oba Femi matches here. They could experiment and get away with it and fans will be fine with the card, particularly if the rest of the matches end up being solid, too.
Maybe they chose him, rather than some other options, because they want to see if he’ll sink or swim when given a bigger opportunity. Hell, since we don’t know how the backstage stuff is as we’re not there, maybe the guy is REALLY well liked, and this is just them wanting to pat him on the back because they had no other options they felt strongly about, so give the kid a shot.
Whatever the reasoning, I think it’s neat, and I’d love to see WWE do this a bit more often. Not too often where it’s overkill, but every once in a while.
