Speculation has been swirling around Mercedes Mone and whether she holds any creative control in AEW since her debut with the company.
This talk tends to resurface whenever Mone secures a win — whether it’s over a veteran, a rising prospect, or an international talent with limited exposure.
According to a report from Fightful Select, sources from both AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling have firmly denied that Mone has any creative control over her booking. Those familiar with her contract say there’s no such clause, and there hasn’t even been internal discussion of her refusing to lose — because, simply put, losing hasn’t been part of the current creative plans. Both companies are reportedly aligned in giving Mone a strong push.
It is said that the rumors stem more from Mone’s commanding on-screen presence than actual backstage power.
Moreover, Mone has shown that she’s willing to prioritize the quality of a match over personal wins. One source cited her 2023 NJPW bout with Willow Nightingale, where Mone reportedly changed the finish mid-match after suffering an injury — choosing to take the loss rather than compromise the integrity of the bout.
