Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts couldn’t help but punish himself for drinking, which in turn didn’t just hurt himself but his ‘brother’ Diamond Dallas Page.
For years, Roberts struggled with substance abuse and would suffer relapses even after seeking help from the former WCW World Champion.
On a recent edition of the “Six Feet Under” podcast, Roberts opened up about his drinking and how he punished himself time and time again. He said,
“The shame thing had already kicked in, so I was whipped…because as soon as I knew I was drunk… I wanted to punish myself. That’s what’s dangerous when you start punishing yourself… I knew where my safe spot was and I knew he wasn’t going to give up on me.”
Roberts’ destructive lifestyle didn’t just harm Roberts but also his friend DDP, who has worked for years to improve Jake’s life. He said,
“Each time I screwed up, the pain was even more, because I didn’t just let myself down but I let my brother down, who was going out there and sticking up for me, fighting for me, and doing all the right things, I hated letting him down.”
Thankfully, Roberts has been doing well in recent years, success he has credited to Page and his tireless work to help others.
Roberts was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014 while Page received the same honor three years later.
