AEW performer William Regal has revealed that his last match was not with Claudio Castagnoli as fans have believed for years.
Regal faced Castagnoli, then Cesaro, on the November 21, 2013 episode of WWE NXT, losing to the Swiss Cyborg.
Speaking on his ‘Gentleman Villain‘ podcast, Regal explained how a tryout in Dubai led to him facing Sami Zayn in the former’s final match with no cameras present:
“I said [to Sami], ‘Let me and you, at the end of this three-day tryout, have a match.’ Two weeks later, my legs went from under me, which I told on Chris Jericho’s show. and I would have my first neck surgery.
“I never wrestled again. The actual last match that was on film was against Cesaro and it couldn’t have been against somebody I thought more highly of. I knew my time was coming to an end.”
Regal was released from WWE earlier this year and now works with Castagnoli in AEW as part of the Blackpool Combat Club.
