The Fall of a Giant Star, Antonio Inoki

Antonio Inoki, a long-time leader in the world of Japanese professional wrestling, passed away on October 1, 2022. The cause was heart failure. He was 79 years old. Inoki was born in Yokohama, Japan in 1943 and immigrated to Brazil, where he worked at a coffee plantation. Then, he was scouted by Rikidozan, who was on an expedition to Brazil. Rikidozan then trained him strictly as his successor, along with the late Giant Baba. During his time in Japan Pro Wrestling, he also traveled to the United States, mainly to Los Angeles, Seattle, and Texas, where he competed with many top wrestlers and became one of the top wrestlers in the world.
The Destroyer, with whom he wrestled, recalled Inoki as being “A very expressive and athletic young man. He had a good wrestling background, and above all, he had a lot of fighting spirit.” In Japan, The Destroyer belonged to All Japan Pro-Wrestling, founded by late Giant Baba, and Antonio Inoki founded New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 1972, so there was no contact after that, but they respected each other. After founding New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Inoki went the strong style route and fought with Lou Thesz, Johnny Powers, Johnny Valentine, Karl Gotch, Tiger Jeet Singh, Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, Big Van Vader, Stan Hansen and others. He also went the martial arts route and fought the reigning professional boxing world champion Mohammed Ali in 1976, which attracted worldwide attention.
In 1989, he became the first professional wrestler to be elected to the National Diet. Serving twice as a member of the House of Councillors; he accomplished superb tasks, such as a hostage rescuer in Iraq and as a conduit to North Korea. In North Korea, he impressed a large crowd with an exciting match against Ric Flair in front of 110,000 spectators, including Muhammad Ali in 1995. In 1998, he held his retirement match at Tokyo Dome. Since then, he has continued to show his shrewdness as a producer of his own organization, IGF, and martial arts. Above all, he was charismatic and always loved by his many fans. He was famous for his yell of “1, 2, 3, dah!” and his slap of Inoki, which he would inject with his fighting spirit when asked by fans.
The day after he passed away, all the sports newspapers carried a front-page article on Inoki. It may be hard for people in the U.S. or English-speaking countries to believe, but in Japan, pro-wrestling is all over the front pages of national newspapers the next day. That is how well pro-wrestling has taken root in Japan and how much the Japanese public still loves Mr. Inoki. Even on FB, Hulk Hogan, Sting, and Ric Flair have sent their condolences to Inoki. Long live the great Antonio Inoki, who left such an impact in Japan and around the world. End.

日本プロレス界で永きに渡りリードし続けてきたアントニオ猪木さんが2022年10月1日
に心不全のためにお亡くなりになりました。 享年79歳でした。
アントニオ猪木は1943年 日本の横浜で生まれブラジルに移民しコーヒー農園で働いていた時
ブラジルに遠征していた力道山にスカウトされた。
その後は力道山に後継者として亡きジャイアント・馬場と一緒に厳しく育成された。
日本プロレス時代にはアメリカにも遠征し、ロスアンゼルス、シアトル、テキサスを主戦場に
多くの一流レスラーと戦い一流レスラーの仲間入りを果たしている。
当時死闘を繰り広げたザ・デストロイヤーはこのように述べている。
「非常に表情豊かで運動神経に恵まれた若者だった。レスリングの素質もあり、何よりも
ファイティングスピリットに富んでいた」
日本ではデストロイヤーはジャイアント馬場が創立した全日本プロレスに属し、アントニオ猪木は
1972年に新日本プロレスを創設したため、その後の接点はなかったがお互いにリスペクト
した関係であった。
新日本プロレス創立後はストロングスタイル路線でルー・テーズ、ジョニー・パワーズ、ジョニー・バレンタイン、カール・ゴッチ、タイガー・ジェット・シン、アンドレ・ザ・ジャイアント、ハルク・ホーガン、ビッグ・バン・ベイダー、スタン・ハンセンらと熱戦を繰り広げた。
また、異種格闘技路線にも走り、1977年には現役のプロボクシング世界チャンピオンのモハメッドアリと戦い
世界中の注目を集めた。
1989年にはプロレスラー出身として初めて国会議員として当選。 参議院議員を2度に渡り務めて、イラクにおける人質救済、北朝鮮とのパイプ役を務めた。
北朝鮮ではモハメッド・アリも参加し11万人の観客が見守る中、リック・フレアーを興奮極まる試合をして大多くの観客を感動させた。
1998年には東京ドームで引退試合を開催した。その後も自身の団体 IGFや格闘技のプロデューサーとしても辣腕ぶりを発揮。 何よりもカリスマ性があり、いつも多くのファンに囲まれ愛された。
1, 2, 3 ダァーと言う雄たけび、ファンに求められれば、闘魂注入する猪木ビンタは有名である。
亡くなった日の翌日のスポーツ新聞には全て猪木さんの記事が一面に掲載された。
アメリカや英語圏の人には信じられないことかも知れないが、日本ではプロレスリングの内容が翌日の全国紙の新聞一面に全て掲載されるのです。 それだけプロレスリングが日本で定着して、なお猪木さんがこれほどまでに日本の国民に愛されているかを物語っています。
FBでもハルク・ホーガン、スティング、リック・フレアーは猪木への哀悼のメッセージを寄せている。
日本、いや世界中でこれだけ影響を残した偉大なるアントニオ猪木よ、永遠なれ。 End
