The Last Man Standing match between WWE Hall Of Famer Edge and Randy Orton at WrestleMania 36 last night received a lot of criticism. However, one of the biggest criticisms from the bout was the choking spot in the gym.
While the match took both men all around the Performance Center, once the fight found its way into the gym, Orton used a weight rope to choke Edge. This reminded many of how Chris Benoit killed himself back in 2007 after murdering his wife and young son. This sparked a strong response on social media as the bout aired last night. According to a report from Wrestling Observer Radio‘s Dave Meltzer, some within WWE were “affected” by the spot.
Meltzer noted that the wrestlers are all well aware of the Benoit story and likely would’ve made the comparison immediately after seeing the spot between Edge and Orton last night. For those unaware, Benoit murdered his wife, Nancy, and his seven-year-old son Daniel, before committing suicide over a three-day period back in June of 2007. Benoit killed himself by hanging himself on a lat pulldown weight machine in his home.
