Backstage Note On Jerry Lawler’s Story About Randy Savage For A&E Biography

As seen during this week’s “WWE Biography” special that aired on A&E, the late WWE Hall of Famer “Macho Man” Randy Savage was showcased. The biography featured an interesting story that was told by Jerry “The King” Lawler which was actually inaccurate. Lawler recalled a story in which Savage was absent during a taping of Monday Night RAW (which Savage was a color commentator for at the time with Vince McMahon). Lawler said Savage was nowhere to be found as McMahon was looking to go over the format of the show with him and Vince was told to watch television (WCW). Lawler said that McMahon didn’t have any reaction to seeing Savage debut on WCW Saturday Night.

For what it’s worth, Lawler’s recalling of the story is indeed untrue and here is the actual story. While Savage did in fact leave WWE and signed a contract with WCW in 1994 and then debuted on a December 1994 episode of WCW Saturday Night, McMahon did address Savage’s WWE exit on live television and wished him nothing but the very best in his endeavors, ending his segment by thanking Savage for all his contributions to WWE. It appears that Lawler was confusing Savage’s departure for Lex Luger’s in 1995. Luger left WWE and signed back with WCW after he worked a WWE house show the night before appearing on the debut edition of WCW Monday Nitro in September 1995.

A&E had different production teams working on different episodes of “WWE Biography” (with WWE Legends like Piper, Savage, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin) and so forth. The parts of the special that looked at allegations around Savage’s behavior toward Gorgeous George and Miss Elizabeth’s death were not a case of WWE attacking Savage, but instead a choice by the producers to look at the darker parts of Savage’s life in context with the rest of his life and career.
