Backstage Note On Jon Moxley’s Contract Extension With AEW, When It Went Down

As previously reported here on eWn, AEW World Champion Jon Moxley recently signed a five-year extension with Tony Khan’s promotion. This included more than just in-ring responsibilities, as Moxley is also signed as a mentor/coach. It was later pointed out that Mox had been working without a contract since July, which is when his original deal expired.

The WON reports that Moxley signed his deal prior to becoming champion once again, likely prior to AEW’s Grand Slam event on September 21. Moxley defeated fellow BCC member Bryan Danielson to capture the title in the main event of that show.

The original plan for Moxley was for him to go away following the All Out main event, only to reappear on October 18 in his hometown of Cincinnati, where he would announce his new deal. Of course, plans changed following the events immediately after All Out. The decision to announce Moxley’s extension was moved up because the promotion wanted a positive announcement after the situation with Sammy Guevara and Andrade. AEW also wanted the news out there prior to Moxley dropping the GCW title to Nick Gage.
