Brock Lesnar successfully defended his WWE Championship against Austin Theory at a WWE live event in Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday. After the match, Lesnar was attacked and laid out by WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, as Reigns and the rest of The Bloodline stood tall over Lesnar. Lesnar was busted open as a result of the attack by Reigns. We have some information on how the booking came to fruition for Reigns and Lesnar leading into the event on Saturday.

According to The Wrestling Observer, an opponent was not set in stone for Lesnar for the WWE Championship defense until closer to showtime. Originally, we were going to see Lesnar vs. Bobby Lashley for the WWE Championship, but as a result of Lashley’s injury, he was unable to compete and is out for quite some time. Therefore, the switch was made to Austin Theory to challenge Lesnar instead.

Roman Reigns was originally scheduled to defend his title against Seth Rollins, then WWE changed that to an “unnamed opponent”. However, those plans went out the window and the match was changed back to its original format of Reigns vs. Rollins.

Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns are currently scheduled to face each other in a Championship Unification Match in the main event for WrestleMania 38: Night 2 on Sunday, April 3rd. The event will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It will be broadcast live on Peacock in the United States and the WWE Network, internationally.
