According a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the segment featuring Kevin Owens and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin for the KO Show portion of WrestleMania 38 (Night One) was supposed to lead into a brief physical altercation with Austin getting his shots in and dropping Owens with a Stunner, then celebrating with the WWE Universe.
However, as Austin was training and getting back into ring shape, he told WWE producers that he felt great and was comfortable with doing an entire match instead. In an interesting note during his training, Austin would stand on the ropes and give the middle finger as he used to. Producers told him that he couldn’t do that anymore because WWE had changed. So he’d do another take and Austin did what he wanted. He was again told not to do it on the live show, but when that time came, he still did what he wanted.
