Backstage Notes On Scrapped Tag Team Match From WrestleMania 38 (Night One)

As many of you know by now, WWE had planned to feature a tag team grudge match featuring The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) vs. Sheamus & Ridge Holland at WrestleMania 38 (Night One). However, the match was scrapped due to time constraints and because of the unfortunate injury that occurred with Rick Boogs from the SmackDown Tag Titles match with The Usos and Shinsuke Nakamura.

Going back a moment to the SmackDown Tag Team Championship match, while the finish would see The Usos still retaining the titles over Nakamura and Boogs, the injury suffered to Boogs obviously changed the match length significantly. The match time was booked for around fifteen minutes and instead ran for only seven minutes. The finish to the match was also reportedly going to be different than what took place.

This brings us to the match with Sheamus & Holland vs. The New Day. This match was scheduled to follow the SmackDown Tag Team Championship match and was going to run for just ten minutes, including entrances, etc. According to a report from Fightful, one of the participants of this match (without mentioning names) was visibly upset that the match was cut.

Originally, the plan was for this to be a 6-Man Tag Team match to include Big E and Butch (Pete Dunne) on the opposing team, but with Big E suffering a fracture to his C1 and C6 vertebrae, obviously those plans were canned and narrowed down to a simple tag match, with Butch being in the corner of Sheamus and Ridge Holland instead of actually competing.

The match was moved and is still planned for WrestleMania 38 (Night Two).

And finally, it’s believed that Big E. would be unable to travel to Dallas, TX for WrestleMania 38 tonight, and is not expected to appear.
