Did the No. 1 contender for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship politic his way out of a main event spot?

Billy Corgan, the current owner and booker of the NWA, sat down with “Busted Open Radio” this week to talk about why Nick Aldis was removed from the upcoming NWA 74 main event against Trevor Murdoch. Corgan said,

“The good news is the growth of the NWA and the Resurgence of the NWA in the modern era, is bringing pressure inside the locker room. Everybody is jousting for position, as they should be. But in the case of Nick Aldis, yes, number one contender for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship against Trevor Murdoch in St. Louis, I’ve dealt with this man for over four years and for every ounce of politicking that you see publicly, there’s about ten times worse behind the scenes.

No one stresses me out more in the NWA than Nick Aldis . No one is more highly paid than Nick Aldis, and no one is more unhappy than Nick Aldis. “So yes, Nick Aldis won a tournament, the Race to the Chase, to become the number one contender… I mean, I’m 55 years old. I’ve got two little kids, I’ve got a musical life, this kind of junk, I just can’t take it anymore. So, I’m here to break some news. He has been stripped of the number one contendership and will not be in the main event at NWA 74.”

A new report from Pwinsider says that there may be some truth to Corgan’s comments on the podcast, as the two sides are no longer getting along as they had previously. Sources close to the matter have indicated that the relationship between Corgan and Aldis had been falling apart and finally boiled over, with one source noting that Aldis had been critical of the company’s recent creative direction. The NWA’s creative is said to be “100% Corgan’s vision” and there was a breakdown between the two sides. Another source indicated that the heat on Aldis was “magma-level” for promoting himself as above the company and criticizing Corgan’s decisions.

The updated card for NWA 74 now has defending Worlds Champion Trevor Murdoch taking on Tyrus (formerly Brodus Clay in WWE) for the title at the upcoming August pay-per-view event. As of this writing, Aldis is still scheduled for the show, with an opponent yet to be named. Aldis is under contract with the NWA through the end of 2022.
