New Japan Pro Wrestling may have had more input in determining what happens regarding the AEW World Championship.
According to the Wrestling Observer, the match between Hirooki Goto and Hiroshi Tanahashi to determine the number one contender for the AEW World Championship was a NJPW call. Although an agreement needed to be made between AEW and NJPW, the decision to make the match came down to NJPW.
Tanahashi was initially scheduled to compete for the AEW World Championship at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door against CM Punk. However, Punk suffered a severe foot injury that would require surgery. This led to Tony Khan announcing a tournament to crown an interim champion. The winner between Goto and Tanahashi will face the winner between Jon Moxley and whoever wins an upcoming battle royal that takes place on AEW Dynamite this week.
