During today’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed WWE’s plans for Sami Zayn and Roman Reigns ahead of WrestleMania 39. According to Meltzer, Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn for the title is currently the plan for the Elimination Chamber. The pay-per-view event is being held in February in Montreal, Quebec, which is Zayn’s hometown.

According to the report, Zayn is the “setup guy” for Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39. The idea for Reigns vs. Zayn at Elimination Chamber has been the plan all along. Zayn’s popularity, and the heat of The Bloodline angle, have not swayed WWE’s creative plans. There is currently no plan to add Sami to the mix for the WrestleMania main event.

Meltzer stated, “They didn’t make a change because they decided not to change plans, and they don’t see Sami Zayn as the guy to main event WrestleMania.” As previously reported here on eWn, Triple H and Vince McMahon do not see Sami Zayn as the face of WWE.

WWE officials do see Cody Rhodes as someone who could main event WrestleMania. Since WWE’s plans for Roman Reigns vs. The Rock did not come to pass, and since Steve Austin turned down the offer to wrestle at this year’s Show of Shows, Cody was seen as the guy. Rhodes’ pectoral injury obviously changed the trajectory of things a bit.

WWE Elimination Chamber will take place on February 18th at 8:00 PM EST from the Bell Centre in Montreal. WrestleMania 39 will take place on April 2nd and 3rd from SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, CA. The pay-per-view will air live on Peacock in the United States, and on the WWE Network internationally.
