Backstage WWE Extreme Rules News – The Original Main Event Plans, McMahon/Orton

As we reported on Monday here on, Vince McMahon was not backstage at Sunday night’s WWE Extreme Rules pay-per-view. McMahon was still in constant communication with top WWE officials via telephone and video messaging. Triple H ran the show and joined Billy Kidman in the gorilla position during the main pay-per-view event.

Although he had only been out of action for around two months, WWE decided to keep Randy Orton and his wife hidden in a bus out in the back parking lot until about a half-hour before his return. Orton’s wife Kim was brought to ringside just prior to the segment.

The original main event for Sunday night’s WWE Extreme Rules pay-per-view event event was Roman Reigns vs. Bobby Lashley. The last hour of the show would have also featured AJ Styles vs. Rusev and Nia Jax vs. Alexa Bliss. About an hour before the pay-per-view went live, the decision was made to have the Iron Man match between Seth Rollins and Dolph Ziggler main event the show. For what it’s worth, that match was originally planned to open the pay-per-view broadcast.

And for those who missed it, WWE cameras picked up Dolph Ziggler and Seth Rollins talking during a sleeper hold in the main event. As seen during the pay-per-view, the fans in Pittsburgh, PA were doing Royal Rumble-style countdowns every time a minute passed on the clock. Eventually the clock was removed from the video wall but they kept chanting. The cameras picked up Ziggler saying that “it’s worse with the clock gone” and Rollins agreed with him.
