AEW wrestler CM Punk has claimed his recent off-script comments about ‘Hangman’ Adam Page were a spur-of-the-moment incident.

On last week’s AEW Dynamite, Punk, then the AEW World Heavyweight Champion, threw out the challenge to Page, aware that he was not scheduled to be on the show.

Branding Page a coward, it’s been reported that this was not part of the plan for the show, and Punk went off-script.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Punk addressed the promo.

“I don’t write stuff [down ahead of time]; I just talk. That’s one of the biggest things that’s missing from pro wrestling. It’s letting people go out there and talk if they know what they’re doing. It can be magic.”

Punk added that his main focus as a member of the AEW roster is to “make people want to see what happens next,” regardless of how they get there.

Punk lost the AEW World Heavyweight Championship to Interim AEW World Champion Jon Moxley on this week’s Dynamite in a title unification match.

Punk vs. Moxley is expected to headline next weekend’s AEW All Out 2022 pay-per-view event.
