AEW star Eddie Kingston was recently interviewed on Freddie Prinze’s “Wrestling With Freddie” podcast as he spoke about the importance of cutting a personal wrestling promo, along with his dislike of scripted promos.

You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:

On the personal importance of his promos: “I’ve been talking shit my whole life, to be honest with you. People are like ‘Oh, you’re so great at promos’. These are not promos to me. This is therapy to me. So all the stuff I feel in my chest or in my stomach during the week where I can’t let out. I can work out, I can do Muay Thai, I can have my girlfriend choke me out in Jiu-Jitsu, which she always does. She’s a black belt, [my belt is] eggshell-colored white. I’d rather just throw punches, that’s why I like Muay Thai. But the emotional stuff, I can’t let out until I get in that ring and have a microphone. So people are like, ‘Everything you say feels so real!’ That’s because it is.”

On declining scripted promos: “Well, even if we were scripted, I’ve been in lower-level promotions— I guess, compared to AEW, I don’t mean any disrespect, where they’ll write stuff out for you. I always just ask them, ‘Hey, can I be myself?’ I know there is this whole thing with wrestlers against writers, or fans against writers. Let’s all relax. Let’s all calm down. Everything goes together at some point.”
