WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther has called Sheamus his toughest opponent to date since joining the promotion.

Last September, the Austrian and the Irishman stole the show at Clash at the Castle in a hard-hitting match that saw Gunther retain his title.

Appearing on WWE’s ‘The Bump,’ Gunther explained why he considers Sheamus his toughest opponent in WWE. He said,

“[He is a] very physical competitor, same as me, and I think that we fed off each other pretty well. I can say after Clash at the Castle it’s definitely an experience. It’s a big rush in the moment, but it was one of the most physical matches I have had to go through so far.”

Next month, WWE will decide Gunther’s WrestleMania 39 opponent with a 20-Superstar Battle Royal inside Madison Square Garden.

Sheamus is one of the 20 stars named for the match, alongside former World Champions The Miz, Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, and others.

It has been reported that WWE’s plan is for Gunther to defend his Intercontinental Championship against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 39.
