NJPW has now unified both the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships as confirmed by NJPW chairman Naoki Sugabayashi. A press conference will be held in the morning to address this unification. Both titles are currently being held by Kota Ibushi, who won them at Wrestle Kingdom 15.
This unification will end a 10 year run for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, having began its lineage in May 2011. The IWGP Heavyweight Title’s lineage dates back to June 1987. The new championship that will be created for Ibushi will be defended against the winner of the New Japan Cup.
New Japan Pro-Wrestling will be hosting a press conference today at 3PM JST.
