Kofi Kingston has said that he was adamant that The Usos becoming the longest-reigning WWE Tag Champions in history should come after defeating the New Day.

In November 2022, Jimmy and Jey’s reign as SmackDown Tag Team Champions (which began in July 2021) became the longest reign of any team in WWE history.

The final obstacle for the Usos came on the November 11, 2022 episode of WWE SmackDown, where the Usos retained against the New Day.

Speaking about that match to The New York Post, Kofi reflected on the significance of The Usos and The New Day’s feud over tag team gold. He said,

“We were pretty adamant about wanting to be able to do that [face The Usos in their final match before breaking the record.] It just makes that moment a lot more special.

“I’m definitely happy we were the ones to be able to pass that torch, for lack of a better turn, to The Usos.”

While the New Day lost that record, Kofi is a record-breaking 15-time Tag Team Champion and is in his first reign as WWE NXT Tag Champion with Xavier Woods.
