New NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Matt Cardona has said that he learned “too late” to pitch directly to Vince McMahon in WWE.
Cardona, who competed for WWE as Zack Ryder, was released in April 2020 after over a decade and a half signed to a contract.
His career in WWE saw several rises and falls, with the “Broski” getting himself over with fans in 2011 thanks to his YouTube series ‘Z! True Long Island Story.’
Appearing on the Headlocked Panel at C2E2, Cardona said that he learned too late to avoid pitching ideas to the writers, and instead go to the Chairman of the Board:
“I learned, and I learned it a little too late in my career, f**k these writers. If you want something done, you’ve got to go to Vince. Because a lot of these writers are too afraid to pitch an idea to Vince. So, I would just go and talk to Vince, and if he said no, at least I know the answer is no.”
Cardona also discussed one pitched idea that was denied, which would’ve seen him get fired by WWE as part of the angle:
“I would get fired and then start doing like indies and stuff like that, and then come back. There was more to it than that. But, that’s something I actually pitched to Vince, and he seemed to like it. He just threw me off to some other writer. So, maybe he didn’t like it and he knew I was going to go in circles.”
Since departing WWE, Cardona has had an incredibly successful run, capturing the GCW World Title last year.
The former Zack Ryder captured the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship from Trevor Murdoch last weekend, and is also the Impact Wrestling Digital Media Champion.
