Mick Foley has discussed Vince McMahon wanting him to leave wrestling after being informed of Foley’s memory loss.

During the first episode of his Foley Is Pod, the hardcore legend spoke about taking so many bumps over the years and eventually discussing it with McMahon after a tag team match with Al Snow. Foley said he couldn’t even remember where he sometimes lived due to the number of bumps he had taken over the years. Foley admitted that he wanted to retire, and it seemed as if McMahon had some concerns as well:

“I talked to Vince; I was so embarrassed that night,” revealed Mick Foley. “I said, ‘Vince, I think I’ve got to hang up the boots.’ At that point, it was the sneakers which I started wearing because of the problems with the knees. That’s where he encouraged me to drop some pounds. I said, ‘Vince, I can’t remember where I live anymore.’ He was like, ‘What’s that?’ I said, ‘I drive past my house, and I can’t remember things, and he said, ‘You’ve just had your last match.'” (from 35:16 to 35:41)

However, Foley would continue to wrestle and carve out a legendary career. After the tag team bout in 1999, Foley would be involved in a feud against Triple H before ultimately deciding to leave and rest up in 2000. Foley explained that McMahon prioritized his health and well-being over money.

“When people talk about Vince being selfish and grinding people too hard, I counter with, ‘okay, maybe there are elements to that,” Foley continued. “But when push came to shove, and he heard one of his guys was having trouble with memory, it was more important to him that I be healthy than I continue to make money for the company.” (from 35:42 to 36:00)

Vince McMahon wanting him to leave wrestling does show that he at least cares for his talent. While the business has always been money-driven, keeping your talent healthy no matter the cost is something to be said. Thankfully, Foley doesn’t have to take anymore wrestling bumps for the rest of his life.
