Following MJF’s attack on William Regal during the latest episode of AEW Dynamite, rumors have run rampant that Regal is on his way back to WWE. It is believed that the angle between AEW’s current World Champion (MJF) and Regal was done in order to write Regal out of storylines. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has some details on Regal leaving AEW, and how long higher-ups with the company knew about it.
There were initially conflicting reports about how long Regal’s deal was for, with one report stating it was for three years. According to someone involved with the deal, it was believed to have been a short-term deal that will expire soon. This is more in line with what Fightful reported yesterday. Multiple WWE sources have added that Regal had an out clause in his contract.
There was talk that Regal was headed to WWE even before Triple H posted clips about him. Rumors only increased on social media after Moxley’s promo insisting that Regal “run away.” Higher-ups within AEW reportedly knew Regal was on his way out several weeks ago, before Full Gear. There were several ideas pitched for the AEW title match between MJF and Jon Moxley, but all of them ended with MJF as champion. Some plans had Regal directly involved, as he was at Full Gear, while others had him more in the background.
The idea is now for Bryan Danielson to feud with MJF, either at the Revolution pay-per-view event in March or earlier. Regal had at one point been pitched for the storyline, but now he has been written out earlier than planned.
