The big news tonight is that AEW President Tony Khan has purchased Ring of Honor.
This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite opened with Tony Khan coming out to announce that AEW has acquired the rights to Ring of Honor. Khan has acquired all of the company’s assets from Sinclair Broadcast Group. This includes the video library, IP and more.
As many of you know, Ring of Honor will be returning from its hiatus with the Supercard of Honor event, which takes place on April 1st in Dallas, Texas.
It should be noted that AEW’s official press release regarding the sale doesn’t mention whether ROH will be a separate entity from AEW.
Ian Riccaboni revealed during a Facebook live session last night that the next set of TV tapings will be taking place from the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 10th. So for the time being, Ring of Honor will be operating on its own.
Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBG) purchased Ring of Honor from Cary Silkin in May of 2011 and the company has been airing the show on syndication on Sinclair affiliates. As of this writing, there is no word on if Hunter “Delirious” Johnston will remain in charge of the booking of the show or whether Ian Riccaboni will remain as the head play-by-play announcer.
It’s worth noting that some of the footage featured in the ROH video library is that of the “All In” pay-per-view event that led to the launch of All Elite Wrestling. Obviously, that’s a big deal and is a significant part of AEW’s history.
