On Tuesday January 4th, WWE NXT will be holding a special event “New Year’s Evil” with NXT North American Champion Carmelo Hayes defending his title against NXT Cruiserweight Champion Roderick Strong in a title unification match. Regardless of who walks away as the dual champion, the plan is for WWE NXT 2.0 is to completely disband the Cruiserweight division entirely.
To expand upon the history of the Cruiserweight Division in recent years, the NXT Cruiserweight title began its lineage as the WWE Cruiserweight Championship in September 2016. It was later re-dubbed the NXT Cruiserweight Championship in 2019. WWE 205 Live was created to highlight the division. However, the show in recent months has been reduced to a half hour and has only continued due to a broadcast deal with Hulu, who paid for the rights fees to stream the show.
