Jon Moxley became interim AEW World Champion after defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi last night at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door. Tanahashi initially challenged CM Punk for the AEW World Championship. However, Punk suffered a foot injury, forcing him to undergo surgery. Well, a new report may’ve revealed the original plans for Moxley.

According to Dave Meltzer from the Wrestling Observer, Moxley was initially slated to be involved in the opening match of the pay-per-view event. Moxley did have beef with Jericho’s stable along with the rest of the Blackpool Combat Club. Moxley will still take on Jericho’s stable inside Blood and Guts this coming week. His Black Pool Combat partner, Bryan Danielson, is still out with an injury.

It’s unknown which spot Moxley would’ve taken in the six-man tag if Punk remained healthy for the show. The opening bout saw Chris Jericho teaming with Sammy Guevara and Minoru Suzuki against the team of Shota Umino, Eddie Kingston, and Wheeler Yuta. Jericho’s team came out victorious after a Judas Effect on Umino. Now that Moxley is interim champion, it’s only a matter of time before he’ll come face to face with CM Punk.
