The original finish for the Mae Young Classic saw Kairi Sane defeating Toni Storm in the finals, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
The plan before the tournament started was for Sane going over Storm. However, WWE officials switched the finish to a semi-final match once WWE decided to go all out with Shayna Baszler and the Four Horsewomen angle. It was noted that the decision was made early in the week for the night of the live finale to be all about Sane. This would allow WWE to save the Horsewomen angle for a later date.
Also, the sports entertainment company didn’t decide on Sane being the winner until Monday. WWE did talk about having the tournament final winner being the new NXT Women’s Champion. Obviously, plans changed due to the fact that WWE has already announced that Sane will compete for the vacant title at NXT Takeover: Houston on November 18th.
