Gunther (formerly known as WALTER) made his main roster debut before Vince McMahon announced his retirement on July 22nd. The Austrian superstar captured the Intercontinental Championship by defeating Ricochet on SmackDown.
According to a rumor reported by WrestleVotes, the previous regime in WWE had “soured” on Gunther. This reportedly occurred after his appearance on the July 4th episode of RAW. WrestleVotes wrote the following:
“Following his appearance on RAW on 7/4, those in power at the time really soured on Gunther for whatever ridiculous reason. To the point where a burial on TV was coming. Just a month later and quite the difference…”
Gunther wrestled R-Truth on the July 4th episode of RAW. He recently retained his Intercontinental Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura.
