According to a new report from ESPN, Vince McMahon was already planning to do mass layoffs in mid-April. The tidbit was made during ESPN’s article on the fall of the XFL.
The article notes that McMahon had already been working on plans for the layoffs at least as of WrestleMania 36 weekend. The layoffs were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the revenue loss of WrestleMania 36 and the revenue decreases at the end of last year. Of course, that led to the departures of WWE Co-Presidents George Barrios and Michelle Wilson. The report says a “fanless but well-received WrestleMania 36” aired and “McMahon was already working on plans for a series of WWE layoffs, furloughs and other cost-cutting moves designed to stabilize the company for an extended period of lower revenues. They were announced April 15.”
