As we reported yesterday here on eWn, NBC will be shutting down their NBC Sports Network by the end of the year. Several WWE shows, including NXT and RAW, may be affected by the change. During the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, it was revealed that WWE’s contract with the USA Network for NXT will expire in October.
Of course, the NBC Sports Network is the main home for the NHL and there is talk that the games will be moved over to the USA Network and the Peacock streaming service. With that being said, this would more than likely force NXT to move to another day as Wednesday nights are big for hockey during the regular season, and even bigger during playoff season. For example, there have been NHL double-headers every Wednesday night on the NBC Sports Network this season. The NHL games draw much higher ratings than WWE NXT so they’d obviously take priority. WWE NXT was previously pre-empted twice last year for the NHL. With NXT’s contract expiring in October, it’s very possible the show will be moving to Tuesday or Thursday at some point. That would leave AEW unopposed on Wednesday nights.
