Kofi Kingston had quite the WWE Championship reign in 2019 after defeating Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania. But, on WWE Friday Night SmackDown’s premiere on FOX, that would all come to a end as Kingston was defeated by Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship in a matter of seconds.
Following the title loss, Kingston would be seen crumbling up pancakes in a backstage segment when the championship is mentioned on the October 18th episode of Smackdown.
According to Tom Colohue of Sportskeeda, Kofi’s character was to slowly transition to a twisted, angry personality intent on reaching the main event level. However, those plans were scrapped by WWE following the injury of Xavier Woods.
“The plan was for Kofi to be the weak link in New Day. He’d lose matches and he’d do a lot of stuff to make you realize he’s not actually okay. We’re not talking heel turn or anything like that. He’d still be Kofi. He’d just be angry and out for revenge.”
The New Day would go on to defeat The Revival on the November 8th episode of Smackdown. According to sources, this title win was always planned, but that Kofi Kingston wasn’t due to be a part of it.
