Per a report from Wrestling Standard (f.k.a. PWStream), original plans for former NXT Champion Andrade “Cien” Almas had him having a quick feud with Sin Cara before moving into the United States Title picture.
He would have then feuded with Jeff Hardy and eventually won the U.S Title. Vince McMahon reportedly really likes the idea of having a foreign heel as the United States Champion.
As for why any of this never happened, WWE decided to give this role to Shinsuke Nakamura instead. WWE initially had plans to give the Japanese star a short run with the WWE title but decided to scrap those ideas. Now Nakamura is expected to eventually win the U.S. Title while Almas is moved to the sidelines.
