In a news piece written for Sports Illustrated by Dave Meltzer, it’s being reported that Seth Rollins was originally set to become the new WWE Champion at Day 1 in the Fatal 4-Way match featuring Rollins, Bobby Lashley, Kevin Owens and then WWE Champion Big E. However, those plans were drastically changed when Roman Reigns tested positive for COVID-19 and was pulled from the event, changing the main event as we saw Brock Lesnar being added to the above match, with Lesnar pinning Big E in a Fatal 5-Way match to become the new WWE Champion.

One interesting note to add is that Paul Heyman was supposed to choose a side between Reigns and Lesnar at the show, but due to those unfortunate circumstances surrounding Reign’s COVID diagnosis, that decision was clearly shown two nights later on Monday Night RAW when Heyman sided with Lesnar and announced that he was once again “advocating” for Brock Lesnar.

Brock Lesnar announced on RAW that he will be showing up on Friday’s edition of WWE SmackDown to confront Roman Reigns face-to-face, as Lesnar will be defending his WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event against Bobby Lashley on January 29th.
