WWE Hall Of Famer Shawn Michaels was recently interviewed by Sports Illustrated. Michaels discussed his WrestleMania 26 retirement match against The Undertaker from the University Of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The match took place on March 28 of 2010. At the time, The Undertaker was still undefeated at WrestleMania. The stipulation was added to the bout that, if Michaels lost, he would be forced to retire.
The storyline was promoted as a “Streak vs. Career” match. Ultimately, Michaels lost the match and would retire from WWE competition. However, Michaels didn’t know whether or not he was actually going to retire until shortly after the match ended. It turns out he had an “out clause” in case he changed his mind. Here’s what he had to say:
“I don’t know that I ever completely decided that it was going to be it [for my career] until after that match was over. We had always sort of discussed sort of an ‘out clause,’ so to speak, if I had the desire to do it again.
“But I can remember myself, and ‘Taker, and Michaels Hayes just sitting there after the match, like we had done the year before, just the three of us, sort of sitting there, alone, taking it in, and I said, ‘You know something, guys? I feel good with that.’”
