Before he was sent home following a backstage altercation with Sammy Guevara, Andrade El Idolo was scheduled to compete on AEW Rampage against The Dark Order’s 10. AEW booked it to be a mask vs. career match. However, AEW President Tony Khan has since pulled the match.
According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW booked the mask vs. career match to take advantage of the online speculation regarding Andrade’s future in the company. Andrade has previously indicated that he wants to leave AEW and return to WWE. If the report is accurate, AEW may’ve been trying to play into what Andrade suggested in interviews.
According to one source, Andrade told AEW that he wasn’t planning on leaving and that the match would’ve taken advantage of some who believed he was. The source also stated that Andrade’s contract is up in June. Others believed Andrade had signed a three-year deal with the company, which means he won’t be able to leave until the Summer of 2024.
