The Reason Why Konnan Stripped Sammy Guevara & Tay Melo Of AAA World Mixed Tag Team Titles

Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo have been stripped of the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championships.

The real-life couple were set to defend the titles against Lady Shani & Octagon Jr. and Komander & Sexy Star II in a Triple Threat Match at Wednesday night’s AAA Noche De Campeones event, but they were double booked with AEW Dynamite taking place in Broomfield, CO on Wednesday night.

Just prior to the scheduled match, AAA booker Konnan announced that he would be vacating the titles as the couple had already canceled on the promotion three times. Konnan said,

“Sammy & Tay have canceled three times, not twice. They wanted their own referee & Tay wanted her own stylist, so I have made a decision. There were three orders of business: Number one, the titles have now been vacated. Number two, I have already sent someone to the United States to get the titles. And Number three, whoever wins this Triple Threat Mix Tag Match will become the new AAA Mixed Tag Champions.”

Flammer & Abismo Negro Jr. replaced Sammy and Tay and went on to capture the vacant titles.

According to Dave Meltzer, “AAA wasn’t thrilled” with AEW booking Melo for Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite.

Meltzer noted that Konnan’s explanation wasn’t the actual reason for stripping the real-life AEW couple of the titles. Instead, the reason Sammy and Tay didn’t appear is because AEW pulled them from the AAA event. Melo had a match set for Dynamite where she teamed with Anna JAS against the joint forces of Ruby Soho and Willow Nightingale. That tag team match was originally supposed to happen before the AAA event, however, Nightingale’s bad health forced AEW President Tony Khan to reschedule the bout. The double booking made it impossible for Sammy and Tay to work both shows in two different locations on the same night.

It was further reported that AAA is considering putting their titles back on members of their active roster due to some frustration over non-AAA wrestlers missing appearances. However, Kenny Omega was named as the exception, and it was stated that AAA would put their most prestigious title on The Cleaner if he went back to Mexico.
