We take a look back at March 27th, 1988. Today, we relive two of the most classic wrestling events of all-time. Join me as we revisit WWE WrestleMania IV and NWA Clash of the Champions.

WWE WrestleMania IV

The WWE had vacated the WWE Championship due to a controversial decision between Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant on “Saturday Night’s Main Event”. As a result, the WWE chose fourteen Superstars, including Hogan and Andre, to compete in a one night tournament to crown a new WWE Champion.

“Macho Man” Randy Savage was crowned the new WWE Champion. He defeated Butch Reed, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, One Man Gang, and “The Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase. This also marked the beginning of “The Mega Powers” storyline.

NWA Clash of the Champions

On the same night, the NWA (WCW) aired the first ever “Clash of the Champions” on WTBS. The company competed with the WWE and setup for one of the greatest wrestling rivalries in the history of our sport. “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair would defend the NWA World Heavyweight Championship against Sting. Both men wrestled to a time-limit draw. Sting may not have won the championship, but he became a household name and the biggest name in NWA-WCW history.
