Tony Khan Comments On Comparisons To Vince McMahon

Last year, MJF deliberately no-showed a meet-and-greet event ahead of AEW Double Or Nothing and cut a heel promo on AEW President Tony Khan soon after. MJF called Khan a “f**king mark” while questioning his role as the President of the company. ‘The Salt Of The Earth’ begged Khan to fire him, resulting in his long hiatus from AEW television until his much-anticipated return at AEW All Out in September.

MJF’s shoot promo caused wrestling fans to draw comparisons to Vince McMahon and Steve Austin’s iconic storyline from the Attitude Era.

While speaking to 98Rock 97.9 Baltimore, Tony Khan addressed the comparisons to Vince McMahon. He said,

“It’s a very different thing. I consider myself almost as much of a device on the show as anything. I believe it’s important to have a person that makes the matches, and everyone knows that I own AEW and run the promotion.”

“I think it makes a lot of sense to have someone on the show that is pushing against authority, but in this case is somebody who is widely hated and not fighting in the best interest of the promotion, because I always try to do everything that’s in the best interest of the wrestling fan and AEW, because that’s what I put first.”

“MJF is an antagonist; he’s antagonized ‘The American Dragon’ Bryan Danielson.”
