A tournament in Japan is part of AEW’s plans for whenever the promotion begins touring internationally.
In the three years since being founded, AEW has only hosted events in the United States, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While speaking to Tokyo Sports, AEW President Tony Khan discussed future plans for AEW, saying that he’d love to one day do a tournament in Japan.
Khan went on to say that a Japanese tournament would feature a mix of AEW talent and upstart Japanese wrestlers, adding that the country is one of the first places he plans on touring when his company travels internationally.
Khan did not give any timeline as to when this tournament could begin or when he believes AEW could tour overseas.
AEW will team with New Japan Pro Wrestling to host Forbidden Door this Sunday at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
