Alberto El Patron (formerly Alberto Del Rio) just can’t seem to escape the legal issues that have dogged him in recent years. We have a report about his latest legal entanglement, this time with the Combate Global MMA promotion.

Patron’s issues with Combate stretch back years at this point. In December of 2019, Patron (then going by the ring name Alberto Rodriguez) took on UFC legend Tito Ortiz under the company’s banner. Ortiz would come out the victor, but Patron wasn’t done trying to come out on top. “Mexico’s Greatest Export” claimed in the months following that match that Combate breached their contract and now owed him $250,000 for the fight. Patron also alleges that the promotion took control of his social media accounts. Patron gave Combate access to his socials so that they could promote the match, but insists that this control has not been given back.

In August of 2022, the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York issued a ruling that the case would move forward. Since then, Patron has filed an amended 28-page lawsuit and Combate has sought to have the case dismissed.

Combate stated that the U.S. District Court of New York lacked jurisdiction, and the case should be dismissed under federal rule of civil procedure. They argued that since Combate, LLC has members in Florida, and Patron is a citizen of Florida, the case shouldn’t be heard in a federal court. The court ordered discovery and will make a ruling by February 6, 2023, after Patron has a chance to argue against a motion to dismiss.

Patron is seeking $250,000 in damages, with 7% interest totaling $26,250. Patron also wants Combate to pay his costs, “reasonable” attorney’s fees, and return control of his social media accounts.
